Nokia Asha 305 review: Smarter 2gether

nokia, nokia asha, nokia asha 305, [nokia asha]
The Nokia Asha 305 is easily one of the cheapest phones with two SIMs and a touchscreen, the closest Android being almost twice as expensive. Price may be the biggest advantage this phone has over the competition but you'd better be prepared for more than a few surprises.

Nokia Asha 305 official photos
With the new Asha touch interface, an updated browser and access to the Nokia store, the Asha 305 promises a near smartphone-like experience. And that's on top of the dual-SIM capabilities, including a hot-swappable SIM slot and a dedicated SIM management app that lets you configure how calling, texting and data are juggled between cards.

Key features :
  • Dual-band GSM, GPRS, EDGE
  • Dual SIM dual stand-by, SIM hot-swap
  • S40-based Asha touch interface
  • 3" WQVGA resistive touchscreen, ~155 pixel density
  • Multi-touch in the gallery and Nokia Maps
  • Display auto-rotation
  • Nokia Browser 2.0
  • Nokia store and 40 EA games for free
  • 2 MP camera
  • microSD card support (up to 32 GB)
  • Complimentary 2 GB microSD card in the box
  • Bluetooth v2.1 (with A2DP)
  • Standard microUSB port, charging
  • 1100 mAh Li-Ion battery
  • Excellent loudspeaker performance
Main disadvantages :
  • Interface slows down at times, due to low RAM
  • Poor screen quality
  • Resistive touchscreen feels awkward
  • Fixed-focus camera
  • QCIF video recording
  • No smart dialing
nokia, nokia asha, nokia asha 305, [nokia asha]

A package like the Asha 305 is built on the not so solid ground of compromise. You get a low-resolution resistive screen and the still camera and camcorder are of the lowest quality. Yet, even the resistive screen can do a multi-touch trick: the so-called multipoint touch enables pinch zooming in the gallery.

The actual touchscreen experience is on a level unseen before in S40 - soft keys are almost completely out of the equation. Of course you'll have to bear with occasional lags and poor response on the resistive unit. On the other hand, the pull-down notifications and quick settings, along with the advanced side-scrollable homescreen make this feel a lot more convenient and user-friendly.
Even little things like screen auto-rotation and a landscape QWERTY keyboard make a lot of difference compared to last time we saw a full-touch S40 on the Nokia C2-03.

Nokia N8 First look - Review

nokia, nokia n8
We were almost starting to suspect mobile phones of giving up and playing soft. They seemed unstoppable you know. They went from 5 to 12 in no time and there was nothing to suggest that digicams will ever get a timeout for a much needed breather.
nokia, nokia n8
Surprised or not, the game is back on and Nokia are pulling the big guns out. The N8 is the new wannabe king of cameraphones. Fat numbers on the specs sheet and all that shining armor, the new Nseries flagship is hitting hard and playing tough.

The Nokia N8 has two massive tasks on its hands: beat digicams at their own game and bring Symbian back to its past glory. The hardest thing perhaps is to tell which one is harder. But if anyone should be trusted to perform a seemingly impossible stunt, (still) market leaders Nokia are a safer bet than many.

Nokia N8 at a glance:
  • General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHz, HSDPA 10.2 Mbps, HSUPA 2 Mbps
  • Form factor: Touchscreen bar
  • Dimensions: 113.5 x 59.1 x 12.9 mm, 86 cc; 135 g
  • Display: 3.5-inch 16M-color nHD (360 x 640 pixels) AMOLED capacitive touchscreen
  • Memory: 16GB storage memory, hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 32GB)
  • OS: Symbian^3
  • CPU: ARM 11 680 MHz processor, 3D Graphics HW accelerator; 256 MB RAM
  • Camera: 12 megapixel large-sensor (1/1.83”) autofocus camera with xenon flash, geo-tagging, face and smile detection and built-in ND filter; 720p video recording@25fps
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP, microUSB port with USB host support, 3.5mm audio jack, GPS receiver with A-GPS, HDMI port
  • Misc: Accelerometer, DivX/XviD video support, Stereo FM radio with RDS, FM transmitter, 720p TV-out, Flash support in the web browser, anodized aluminum unibody, proximity sensor, scratch-resistant display
  • Battery: 1200 mAh Li-Ion battery
nokia, nokia n8
As you see the hardware is all there – there’re not too many devices out there that can match the Nokia N8. Some will understandably frown at what looks like unimpressive CPU clock speed and scarce RAM. Just remember that it’s the performance to be judged here and not the sheer numbers.
Different platforms have different needs so we’ll only know if Symbian^3 can do without a 1GHz Snapdragon after we’ve seen the N8 in proper action.

Nokia Lumia 610 NFC

nokia, nokia lumia, nokia lumia 610 nfc,

According to recent estimates Nokia's smartphone sales could really use a boost. The Finns are putting most of their hopes on the WP flagship Lumia 900 and the Symbian 808 PureView camera phone, but the one we're about to review might come in quite handy too.
nokia, nokia lumia, nokia lumia 610 nfc,
The Nokia Lumia 610 is a simple phone with a simple goal: make the Windows Phone experience even more accessible. This basic smartphone is priced to not gather dust on the shelves and you can guess the features aren't exactly top notch. But this is where the Lumia 610 is perhaps more fortunate than its expensive siblings. It must be harder for the likes of the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 to get away with some of the platform's limitations. The Lumia 610 looks a lot like the Lumia 710 on the outside, but has less-capable hardware inside. Now, that means even tighter limits on what the phone can do but it's an entry-level smartphone after all. Focusing on what you get rather than on what's missing is the right attitude in this price range. And that's exactly what we're going to do in the following lists.

Features :

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • Quad-band 3G with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.7 Mbps HSUPA support
  • 3.7" 65K-color LCD capacitive touchscreen of WVGA resolution
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, VGA video @30fps
  • Windows Phone 7.5 OS (Refresh)
  • 800MHz ARM Cortex-A5 CPU, Adreno 200 GPU, 256MB of RAM, Qualcomm MSM7227A chipset
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • GPS receiver with A-GPS support and free lifetime voice-guided navigation
  • Digital compass
  • 8GB on-board storage
  • Active noise cancellation with a dedicated mic
  • Built-in accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack; FM Radio with RDS
  • microUSB port
  • Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and EDR
  • Deep and coherent SNS integration throughout the interface

Main disadvantages :

  • Some apps are incompatible due to low RAM
  • No Flash or Silverlight support in browser
  • No USB mass storage (Zune-only file management and sync)
  • No video calls and no front-facing camera
  • No memory card slot
  • microSIM card slot
  • No native DivX/XviD support, videos have to be Zune-transcoded
  • No HD recording or playback, due to hardware limitations
  • Will probably be stuck on this Windows Phone version for good
The long list of cons might ring a lot of bells and, if you are familiar with the Windows Phone OS you already know most of them are platform-wide limitations. On the other hand, familiarity with the OS most probably takes you off the list of potential Lumia 610 targets. It's rather a beginner's smartphone, one that will introduce you to WP7 if you're ready to move on from feature phones.

Users with no smartphone experience are less likely to be concerned about the amount of RAM. In fact, people with some experience with older Symbian will see nothing wrong with 256MB. What it actually means is there's no HD video recording and playback. Some apps, like Skype and Angry Birds will not run due to insufficient memory, but you should be getting the same solid set of features for the most part.

Nokia Lumia 610

What the Lumia 610 offers is a low-cost Windows Phone experience. It seems perfectly suited for emerging markets, where Nokia should have built a strong customer base of potential first-time smartphone users by now. Carriers on the old continent will most certainly be interested in the Lumia 610, too, and if you think an entry-level Windows smartphone is worth a look, this review will hopefully help you know it better. We start with the hardware right after the break.

Nokia E5 Review: Textbook Texter

nokia, nokia e5, nokia e5 review, [nokia e5]

Email used to be a part of the corporate world and now it’s increasingly becoming an essential means of communication for the lot of us – not just the white-collar kind. So if you can’t fight it, the best thing to do is get yourself properly equipped – and the Nokia E5 is the right tool for the job. It’s no old timer either, it knows how to deal with those newfangled social networks as well.

The Nokia E5 has skill to match the Nokia E72 down to the last spec. OK, almost. Some features have sure taken a hit (what’s with the fixed-focus 5MP camera), but that’s something most people can live with considering the lower price of the E5.

nokia, nokia e5, nokia e5 review, [nokia e5]
We found the Nokia C3 to be an excellent no-frills messenger. The Nokia E5 brings Symbian aboard, which accounts for many of its advantages – multitasking, Office document viewing and editing, free voice-guided navigation – you know the drill.

Anyway, here’s what the Nokia E5 has going for and against it, in short.

Features :
  • QWERTY messenger bar
  • Quad-band GSM/EDGE
  • Tri-band 3G with 10.2Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA
  • Symbian S60 UI, 3rd edition FP2
  • 600MHz processor, 256MB RAM; 250MB user-accessible storage
  • 2.36" 256K-color QVGA display
  • 5 megapixel fixed-focus camera, LED flash
  • VGA video recording at 15fps
  • Wi-Fi b/g; DLNA and UPnP support
  • GPS receiver; Ovi Maps 3.0 with free life-time voice guided navigation
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS, Internet radio
  • Bluetooth (with A2DP)
  • Standard microUSB port (charging)
  • microSD card slot (32GB supported, 2GB included)
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • Good email and social networking support
  • Office document editor; PDF viewer; ZIP file support
  • Good audio quality
  • Reasonable price
  • Microsoft Office Messenger support
  • Quick Business and Personal homescreen toggle
Main disadvantages :
  • Non-hot-swappable microSD card under the battery
  • Camera doesn’t have autofocus
  • Poor video recording
  • Low-res screen isn’t very good for browsing
  • No native Twitter and MySpace clients
nokia, nokia e5, nokia e5 review, [nokia e5]

The Nokia E5 is probably targeted at young people stuck in a corporate environment. Or maybe it’s caught in the trend of more and more companies betting on social networking to boost sales. Whatever the reason, the Nokia E5 has pretty extensive support for social networks and IM chatting to go along with strictly-business offerings like the Microsoft Office messenger.

nokia, nokia e5, nokia e5 review, [nokia e5]
No matter how good touchscreen input has gotten these last few years, a good old physical QWERTY is still the real deal. Which is why QWERTY messenger bars like the E5 can survive in a world dominated by touch phones.

The high price associated with touch phones (at least the ones with a big enough screen to even consider heavy texting) makes the affordable Nokia E5 a sensible alternative – especially for users who think touchscreen doesn’t make sense in business.

Nokia C6 Review: A Playful Character

nokia, nokia c6
Yesterday’s high-end is the new midrange we like to say. The Nokia C6 has almost exactly the same features as the Nokia N97 mini but hangs a big Sale sign. Time to shop for high-end features off high street.

The C-series are trying to distill the Nokia knowledge and experience into a lineup of simple and affordable phones. There’s a bit of everything there: from cheap entry-level handsets to smartphones that border on the Eseries and Nseries.
nokia, nokia c6
And Nokia is in no mood to relax it seems. The C-series went from one to six in almost no time, and a C7 may as well be on the way. Now, technically there is no number four –but that’s one number Nokia isn’t really fond of. Anyway, if there ever was to be a C4 we just know it would’ve been dynamite.
Being a C-series phone, you can expect the C6 to be a decent all-rounder. And it is. There’re no mind-blowing features but there’s nothing major missing either. And what isn’t there (e.g. document editing) can be easily fixed with the right app.

Features :
  • 3.2" 16M-color resistive touchscreen of 640 x 360 pixel resolution
  • Symbian OS 9.4 with S60 5th edition UI
  • Slide-out four-row full QWERTY keyboard
  • ARM 11 434MHz CPU
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • Tri-band 3G with 3.6Mbps HSDPA support
  • 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and VGA@30fps video recording
  • Wi-Fi and stereo Bluetooth v2.1
  • GPS with A-GPS and free lifetime voice-guided navigation license
  • microSD card (16 GB supported, 2GB included)
  • Built-in accelerometer for display auto-rotation, turn-to-mute
  • 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Smart dialing
  • Stereo FM Radio with RDS
  • microUSB port
  • Web browser has Flash support
  • Good audio quality
  • Office document viewer
Main disadvantages :
  • Display performs poorly under direct sunlight
  • The S60 touch UI is clunky
  • Doesn’t charge off USB
  • Average loudspeaker performance
  • No DivX or XviD video support out-of-the-box
  • No office document editing (without a paid upgrade)
  • No camera lens protection
nokia, nokia c6
These days, communication over text-based channels is bigger than ever – SMS, email, Twitter, Facebook, IM to name but a few. And they have a certain advantage over voice calling. They’re cheap, or absolutely free, even when you’re reaching someone on another continent.

nokia, nokia c6

nokia, nokia c6

Text-based messaging is important. But as good as touchscreen input methods are getting (especially with clever tricks such as Swype), there’s just no match for a good hardware QWERTY keyboard.
There isn’t as much pressure on the Nokia C6 as there was on the N97 duo. The C6 is not a top-tier device – it’s a high volume device instead. You know, the one most people end up buying after deciding that the dream device costs too much.

Nokia C3 | Mobile Phone

nokia, nokia c3, [nokia c3]
Nokia C3 is young and social, simple and reliable. Messaging and social networking are the very heart of this handset. But are they enough of a head-turner to become a phone's key selling points? Sure thing! Just add a pinch of charisma and hang a price tag fit for the masses and you've got yourself a recipe for a true love story.

At its Indonesia launch, the phone drew massive crowds and it seems success in Europe is only a matter of time – with a price tag of about 100 euro. Compromises are always implied in this price bracket but the Nokia C3 does well to focus all attention on its strengths. It’s a budget package – no doubt about that – but so wonderfully balanced. It has all the relevant features and the target audience isn’t likely to miss what’s not there.
nokia, nokia c3, [nokia c3]
A QWERTY messenger focused on the basics, the Nokia C3 is an excellent upgrade option for the budget-minded. And social networking isn’t just a thing for marketing to work with. The full QWERTY keyboard, dedicated Messaging and Contacts keys, along with Wi-Fi connectivity round off a solid package that will give the right user all the performance they need.

Key features
  • QWERTY messenger bar
  • Quad-band GSM/EDGE
  • 802.11b/g Wi-Fi support
  • Solid SNS integration on the homescreen and with dedicated buttons
  • 2.4" 256K-color QVGA display with excellent sunlight legibility
  • 2 megapixel fixed-focus camera
  • QVGA video recording at 15fps
  • Series 40 UI, 6th edition
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS, Visual radio
  • Bluetooth (with A2DP)
  • Standard microUSB port
  • microSD card slot (8GB supported, 2GB included)
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • Great audio quality
  • Reasonable price

Main disadvantages
  • No 3G
  • Low-grade camera, no autofocus, no flash
  • Poor video recording
  • S40 is outdated, never mind the visual updates
  • No multi-tasking
  • Doesn't charge off the microUSB port
  • No USB cable in the retail box
  • No office document viewer
  • No smart dialing

nokia, nokia c3, [nokia c3]

The Nokia C3 is a social gadget for the young. What’s not to like if Facebook is your second home and you want to always stay in touch. Attractive design and the right feature set come at a price that many can afford. The Nokia C3 is so full of potential because it’s suited for both emerging and mature markets.

In the low end, you will sometimes come across rare gems of phones that will surprise you with their styling and features. The Nokia C3 isn’t one of them. The key word here is enough. The build, the connectivity, the interface – even the imaging – is good enough.

A 2MP fixed-focus camera isn’t the kind to send your digicam into retirement – it’s good enough for photography you need to quickly share. The screen isn’t perfect for media or browsing, there’s no fast network data, you have a QWERTY keyboard but no document editing – you catch our drift.
