HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE

The DROID Incredible line of smartphones for Verizon Wireless, much like the EVO family offered by Sprint, consists of US-only, carrier exclusive devices made by HTC. The HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE is the latest member of the family to come our way and it seems to have ambitions worthy of its rather epic name.

htc, htc droid, htc incredible, htc 4g lte

Unlike its predecessor, which was a minor update over the original, the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE is a major leap forwards. The smartphone offers a curious blend of high-end features, packed into an already familiar looking and pocket-friendly package. As a matter of fact, you will have a hard time finding a more powerful Android device with similar dimensions on the US market.

Here goes the two lists, summing up the most important things you need to know about the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE.

htc, htc droid, htc incredible, htc 4g lte

Features :
  •     LTE/EVDO/CDMA network support
  •     4 " 16M-color Super LCD capacitive touchscreen of qHD resolution (960 x 540 pixels); Gorilla glass
  •     Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich with HTC Sense 4.0
  •     1.2 GHz dual-core Krait CPU, Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 chipset
  •     1 GB of RAM and 8GB of storage
  •     microSD card slot
  •     8 MP autofocus camera with LED flash; face detection and geotagging
  •     1080p and 720p video recording @ 30fps with stereo sound
  •     720p front-facing camera for video-chat
  •     Wi-Fi b/g/n and DLNA
  •     GPS with A-GPS
  •     NFC connectivity
  •     Accelerometer, proximity sensor and auto-brightness sensor
  •     Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  •     microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth
  •     MHL TV-out (requires MHL-to-HDMI adapter)
  •     Smart dialing, voice dialing
  •     DivX/XviD video support
  •     HTC Portable Hotspot
  •     Beats audio enhancements
Main disadvantages :
  •     Rather thick for a high-end device at 11.7mm
  •     Verizon's UI customizations are extremely intrusive
  •     Ageing looks
  •     No dedicated camera button
  •     No FM radio
As you probably noticed , the HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE is anything but short on processing power. Even when underclocked, the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 with its two Krait CPU cores is more than sufficient to easily pull a smartphone through any task you throw at it.

The fairly compact body of the Incredible 4G LTE is likely its most important feature. The device offers a great alternative to those who think that a Galaxy S III or an HTC One X is a bit too much to handle. Also, we had almost forgotten when was the last time we could handle an Android flagship with one hand.

The HTC DROID Incredible 4G LTE does have its disadvantages but depending on your preferences and usage patterns they might not matter too much to you. The phone's looks are hardly revolutionary, but some might prefer to call the design an HTC classic. . Either way, the device is easily recognizable as a member of the Taiwanese company's smartphone lineup.

Sony Xperia go | Preview

sony, sony xperia, sony xperia go, [sony xperia]

The Sony Xperia go is not a phone to keep on a short leash. Not your kind of phone either if you'd say no to a dip in the pool because you are expecting an important call. The Sony Xperia go lets you join the fun. The midrange package that Sony just brought to the market aims to offer plenty of bang for your buck - and a bang of a time.
sony, sony xperia, sony xperia go, [sony xperia]
The Xperia go is a smartphone that you don't need to constantly look after. The little rugged droid will have you covered in situations very few other phones will put up with, let alone survive. Drop it or sink it, the Xperia go will take it without a flinch. And there's more where that came from. Here's the short version of what the Xperia go is all about.

Features :

  • IP67 certified for dust and water resistance, wet-finger tracking
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • 3G with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA
  • 3.5" 16M-color LED-backlit LCD capacitive touchscreen of HVGA resolution (320 x 480 pixels) at around 165 ppi
  • Bravia Mobile engine
  • Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread
  • Dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 CPU, Mali-400 GPU, NovaThor U8500 chipset
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 5 MP autofocus camera, single LED flashlight, geotagging, image stabilization, smile detection, touch focus
  • 720p video @ 30fps
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot functionality and DLNA
  • GPS with A-GPS, Wisepilot navigation
  • microSD slot (32GB supported, 2GB card included)
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor, notification LED
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • TrackID music recognition
  • Relevant package of apps
  • MicroUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1
  • Adobe Flash support
Main disadvantages :
  • No ICS out of the box
  • Screen resolution a bit low by today's standards
  • No arm case and wrist strap in the bundle (ala the Sony Ericsson Xperia active)- available in the Xperia go "Sports Edition"
  • No hardware camera shutter key
  • No secondary camera, no video calls
  • Loudspeaker has below average performance
  • No DivX/XviD video support, 1080p video playback is a no go, too
  • No ANT+ support for connection to sports peripherals (unlike the Xperia active)
Now, who said you can only have two out of the three if you're after compact size, rugged build and performance under the same roof. The Sony Xperia go has the brains to go with the toughness and is still compact enough to carry around and slip into any pocket.

To make it even better, Sony has addressed two of the main issues we had with the predecessor - the Xperia active. There's now a capable dual-core chipset under the hood and the screen has grown to the far more usable 3.5". We could have probably used some extra pixels, but the Xperia go sounds like a package that's hard to beat as it is.

Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab

samsung, samsung p1000, samsung galaxy, samsung galaxy tab
Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab is Samsung’s move onto the tablet warfield and luckily we are right here in the battle fray to give you first-hand scoop from the announcement event. Some might argue that it’s rather a step down from laptops but the Samsung Galaxy Tab smartphone DNA is obvious from the moment you touch it.

samsung, samsung p1000, samsung galaxy, samsung galaxy tab
The 7-inch Android tablet has full phone functionality and the only thing that separates it from being called an insanely oversized cell phone is the fact that you cannot make phone calls by holding it next to your ear. The rest of the specs sheet looks like it belongs to a cell phone if you don’t mind the oversized screen.

Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab at a glance
  • Form factor: Tablet
  • Size: 190.09 x 120.45 x 11.98mm, 380g
  • Display: 16M colors 7” TFT LCD capacitive touchscreen of WVGA resolution
  • OS: Android 2.2 Froyo
  • CPU: 1 GHz Hummingbird CPU with PowerVR SGX540 graphics accelerator, 512 MB of RAM
  • Camera: 3.2 MP autofocus camera with D1 video recording; LED flash
  • Memory: 16 GB internal memory, expandable through a microSD card slot
  • Connectivity: quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band (900/1900/2100 MHz) UMTS with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA 5.76 Mbps support, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Assisted GPS, Bluetooth 3.0, 30-pin connector
  • Battery: 4,000mAh (Up to 7 hours of video playback)
  • Extra features: Gyro sensor, accelerometer sensor for automatic UI rotation, ambient light sensor, Adobe Flash Player 10.1 support
  • However the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab specs don’t have the privilege to be considered in isolation. With the biggest player in the tablet world also belonging to the phone OS tablet category, the Tab will always be compared to it. The Apple iPad has quite a head start and it will be hard for a newcomer to steal the spotlight, but so was the iPhone back in the day and that didn’t stop Samsung from trying.
  • So here’s a brief look at what the two big guns hold as advantages over each other.
  • Samsung Galaxy P1000 Tab over Apple iPad
  • Lighter and smaller, easier on the pocket
  • Telephony (including 3G video calls)
  • 3.2 MP camera with D1 video recording @ 30 fps and LED flash
  • Android OS v2.2 Froyo
  • Proper multitasking (though the iPad is getting that too in couple of months)
  • microSD card slot for memory expansion
  • Uses regular size SIM card
  • 16:9 widescreen display
  • Adobe Flash player 10.1
  • Bluetooth 3.0
Apple iPad over Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab
  • Larger screen
  • Better viewing angles of the display
  • Metal body
  • iOS 3.1.3 with more than 25 000 apps written for it
  • Larger internal storage (iPad 64GB)
  • Longer battery life
samsung, samsung p1000, samsung galaxy, samsung galaxy tab

There’s something we would like to highlight in the lists above. The first items in each of them turn this into a choice between handling and functionality (because a tablet’s main feature is its screen), which boils down to picking your priorities, rather than picking the better of two.

And that leads us to suspect that it may not be a battle for survival between those two. There might just be a spot in the sun for both of those cool gadgets after all. But it’s still too early to tell as we have a whole lot of touching to do before we make any conclusions. And even if those two do eventually settle in their own corners of the ring, punches will fly quite heavily at one stage or another.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 - review

blackberry, blackberry torch, blackberry torch 9800, [blackberry torch 9800]

The BlackBerry Torch is not the first phone to give you both a full hardware QWERTY keyboard and an ample touchscreen in a smartphone setting. But it’s a debut for BlackBerry and one that will probably shape the future for the next generation of RIM phones. The supplied 6th version of the BlackBerry OS is looking to balance user-friendliness and performance, tradition and creativity in the latest BlackBerry touch products.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is the usual impressively built gadget, the ultimate email machine. One would think RIM is among the lucky few phone makers that could’ve for ever pretended the iPhone didn’t exist. When your devices are in a class of their own and you’re a household name in corporate services.

blackberry, blackberry torch, blackberry torch 9800, [blackberry torch 9800]
But RIM is not looking for safety in habit. We’ve seen enough proof that complacency is not on the company’s agenda. And they deserve credit for that. RIM still put business users first but the game has changed and they know it. So, a first-ever slider and a new OS are the torchbearer for RIM looking to revise their whole strategy.

Key features
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE
  • 3G with HSPA support
  • 3.2" 16M-color multi-touch capacitive touchscreen of 360 x 480 pixel resolution
  • 5 MP autofocus camera with LED flash and VGA video recording
  • BlackBerry OS 6
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Built-in GPS with BlackBerry maps preloaded
  • 4 GB internal storage and a hot-swappable microSD card slot
  • Nice design and build quality
  • 3.5mm standard audio jack
  • Accelerometer sensor for screen auto-rotate
  • Bluetooth v2.1 and microUSB v2.0
  • Document viewer
  • Optical trackpad
  • Good audio quality
  • DivX and XviD support
Main disadvantages
  • Comes pricey
  • No document editing without a paid upgrade
  • Interface needs more polishing
  • No FM radio
  • No web browser Flash support
  • No dedicated video-call camera
  • No email support or BlackBerry maps without BlackBerry Internet Service account
  • Loudspeaker way too quiet
blackberry, blackberry torch, blackberry torch 9800, [blackberry torch 9800]

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is meant to appeal to the average Joe while making sure the typical corporate user receives the usual high quality service. Wait a minute. Since when are they even remotely interested in the average Joe? Now, that’s what this whole thing is all about. With touchscreen, app stores and the growing smartphone market share, the typical mobile phone user is not what they used to be.

RIM not only makes phones – it’s a service provider. But that has changed too. People are no longer simply offered a piece of hardware – they get online services by others too – Ovi, Google or else. That’s the new reality RIM know they need to adjust to. Keeping up with an evolving market without losing their identity is not an easy thing to do. At least the Torch 9800 isn’t their first try. The clickable SurePress touchscreen didn’t quite make the splash it was supposed to. But they stood by it and tried to make it better.

Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos

The world-wide edition of the Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos is now official. It's been a while since we saw the dual-mode version of the phone get announced for India. Now we finally have the two-SIM-slot variety intended for for international GSM markets.

samsung, samsung galaxy, samsung galaxy ace, samsung galaxy ace duos
Specs-wise, the Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos is no surprise. There's a 3.5” HVGA (320x480px) LCD screen, 5MP camera with VGA video recording, 832MHz processor, 512MB RAM and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The user-available on-board storage space is supposedly 3GB, but there's a microSD slot as well. The battery on this one is mere 1,300 mAh unlike the one on the CDMA variety, which is 1650 mAh. But hey, perhaps CDMA networks strain battery consumption harder.

The good news are that at 11.5mm thickness, the new dual SIM variety of the Galaxy Ace Duos is as slim as the original Galaxy Ace and it's less than 10g heavier.

The smartphone comes with Samsung’s proprietary ‘Dual SIM always on’ feature, which automatically forwards calls from SIM 2 to the SIM 1 when when the user is talking on SIM 1, meaning there are no calls missed calls.

The Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos will launch first in Russia this June but it will later roll out to the rest of Europe, CIS, Latin America, Southeast and Southwest Asia, Middle East, Africa, and China. The GSM+CDMA version costs $240 in India, so we should probably expect similar pricing with the worldwide edition as well.

HTC Wildfire Desire Mini

htc, htc wildfire, htc desire, htc wildfire desire mini, [htc wildfire]

Occasionally HTC takes a little break from high-end smartphones and dips its toes in the waters of the lower midrange. The HTC Wildfire is a down-sized, down-clocked and down-priced version of the HTC Desire. If Sony Ericsson can do it with the X10 mini, then HTC have all the right in the world to make a Desire mini too.

But while the Desire was something that easily snatched everybody’s attention, the Wildfire is a bit more toned down despite its fire-some name.

htc, htc wildfire, htc desire, htc wildfire desire mini, [htc wildfire]

Features :
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • 3G with 7.2 Mbps HSDPA
  • Android OS v2.1 (Éclair) with Sense UI
  • 3.2" capacitive touchscreen of QVGA resolution
  • Multi-touch support
  • Qualcomm MSM 7225 528 MHz CPU, 384 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM
  • 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash and touch focus
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and GPS receiver
  • Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate
  • Turn-to-mute, lift-to-tone-down
  • Proximity sensor
  • Smart dialing
  • Standard miniUSB port for charging and data
  • Bluetooth with A2DP, file transfers
  • microSD card slot, a 2GB card in the box
  • Standard 3.5mm audio jack
  • Social network integration: Facebook, Twitter and Flickr through Friend Stream
  • Flash-enabled browser
  • Direct access to the official Android repository
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
Main disadvantages :
  • Poor screen image quality, QVGA doesn’t do Android OS and the display size justice
  • No video-call camera or videocalling whatsoever
  • CIF@15fps video recording (352 x 288 pixels) is below par
  • No voice dialing
  • No DivX or XviD video support out of the box
  • No TV-out port
htc, htc wildfire, htc desire, htc wildfire desire mini, [htc wildfire]

The Wildfire is certainly the right phone for those who like to always stay in touch. The high-end connectivity is all there, along with solid social network integration and browsing. It seems the display and CPU are the only downgrades from the Desire.
But that’s still a lot. Android phones with QVGA screens have failed to impress and the size of the Wildfire’s display gives no reason to be optimistic here.

htc, htc wildfire, htc desire, htc wildfire desire mini, [htc wildfire]

On the other hand, the Wildfire boasts the premium finish of the Nexus One and the HTC Desire. Not only is a touch of style always welcome in the lower tiers of the market but users will probably appreciate the compact size too.So, repackaging a flagship device to sell to a wider range of customers is easier said than done, so let’s see what the Wildfire has to offer. By the way, choosing a name that’s so much catchier is a good way to start.

HTC Aria Review | The Little Tenor

htc, htc aria, htc aria series, [htc aria]
First we were hit by a Wildfire, now we’re being soothed by an Aria. The HTC Aria shares a lot of DNA with the HD mini, but makes the jump to Android and is ready to take on compact touchscreen mid rangers.

htc, htc aria, htc aria series, [htc aria]

The HTC Aria goes against the current trend of ever growing touchscreens. HTC are already pushing the limits with the 4.3” display on the Evo 4G. The Aria settles for a more compact 3.2” screen and it opts out of the gigahertz race too – with a 600MHz CPU inside.

But it doesn’t show – the software on the HTC Aria is ticking fast and smooth, no lags and speed bumps. And that’s on Eclair – when Froyo arrives it will make things even smoother. Here’s how much (or how little in fact) the Aria has changed since the HD mini.

Features :
  • 3.2" 256K-color HVGA capacitive touchscreen with multi-touch input
  • Compact body and bold industrial design
  • Android 2.1 Eclair with Sense UI
  • Qualcomm MSM7227 600 MHz CPU and 384MB RAM
  • Quad-band GSM support with dual-band HSDPA 7.2Mbps and HSUPA 2 Mbps
  • Wi-Fi b/g connectivity
  • Built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS support
  • 5 MP autofocus camera; touch focus, geotagging and face detection
  • VGA video recording at 30fps
  • microSD card slot (32GB supported, 2GB included)
  • Office documents and PDF viewer
  • Optical trackpad
  • Standard microUSB port and Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP
  • Standard 3.5mm audio jack
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Flash support in the browser
  • YouTube client, Facebook and Twitter integration
  • Very good audio quality
  • Excellent loudspeaker performance
  • USB tethering

Main disadvantages :
  • Poor display sunlight legibility
  • Patchy Flash support in the browser
  • Card slot under the battery cover
  • No DivX/XviD video support out-of-the-box
  • No secondary video-call camera
  • No voice dialing
  • No dedicated camera key, no lens cover and no camera flash
The front has changed a bit – mostly the keys and the fresh addition of an optical trackpad. The signature screws on the back are here again – they serve both a decorative and a practical purpose, not to mention they make the HTC Aria look tough and rugged.

htc, htc aria, htc aria series, [htc aria]
Other than that, the HTC Aria promises the same solid user experience as the other HTC droids with Sense UI. It comes with a great software package out of the box (Office document viewer, social networking apps) so we don’t anticipate any problems on that score.

The HTC Android genealogy is getting quite tangled up – the Legend is Hero’s successor and the HTC Wildfire is a bite-sized HTC Desire, with the HTC Aria sitting somewhere in-between those two.

LG Optimus Me

lg, lg optimus, lg optimus me, [lg optimus me]
LG Optimus Me is a smartphone with a 2.8 inch capacitive touchscreen display, a screen resolution of 240 x 320 pixels and the screen reaches 143 ppi density. LG opts for HVGA resolution in this already small screen, and the result is small icons, small text onscreen and a tiny QWERTY keyboard to compose messages with. The screen of the LG Optimus Me is multitouch. With a resolution of only 240 x 320 pixel, brightness and visibility poor. But the bottom of the screen there are 4 buttons Android touchscreen navigation with a sufficient response rate.

The Optimus Me is a good example of this; its plastic body is moulded into a nice curved shape, with a steel-grey coloured strip dressing this unit up like a pinstripe along a sharp-looking suit. On the front of the phone, LG adds physical calling buttons in addition to the standard Android navigation keys, and on the back you'll find the handset's 3.2-megapixel camera lens.

The performance of the LG Optimus Me uses ARM 11 600 MHz processor with Qualcomm MSM7227 chipset and GPU graphics card Andreno 200 pda. The operating system uses Android 2.2 Froyo. For connectivity, LG Optimus Me is powered with HSDPA 3.6 Mbps, WiFi b/g, WiFi hotspot, and Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and EDR.

The smaller screen contributes to a reasonable battery life of nearly two days, with LG opting for a generous 1250mAh battery in this pint-sized smartphone. Call quality is acceptable, too, with decent volume and clarity from the earpiece speaker and good microphone performance as well.

The camera presented the LG Optimus Me is 3.15 MP with resolution up shot of 2048 x 1536 pixels. There are some features like digital zoom, brightness, effects, ISO, white balance, timer, geo tagging and quality complement this camera settings. The results of indoor and outdoor it is relatively the same class with the Galaxy Mini. Outside the room is quite nice, but in the room less than satisfactory. This camera can be used to record VGA resolution video (640 × 480 pixels). As Android phones in general, you have to immerse Micro SD card (external memory) before you can use the camera.
